Much like baseball cards, cigarette cards were issued by tobacco manufacturers in China during the 1920s~1950s, to promote cigarette brands. Subject matters ranged from beautiful women, Western curios, Peking opera, etc.One favorite theme was the “360 trades”, which is an expression used to mean all trades. This particular cigarette card depicts a street vendor frying chestnuts in a pan of hot black sand and sugar mixture. Chestnuts prepared this way is still a favorite amongst passersby all over China, especially around the Moon Festival when chestnuts are harvested.
