Much like baseball cards, cigarette cards were issued by tobacco manufacturers in China during the 1920s~1950s to promote cigarette brands. Subject matters ranged from beautiful women, Western curios, Peking opera, etc. One favorite theme was the “360 trades”, which is an expression used to mean all trades. This particular cigarette card depicts a vendor selling two kinds of soup —— one is a spicy hot soup, the other is a chicken broth filled with intestines, duck blood, innards, and tendons. Business was especially good on a cold winter’s night.
